Interior design by Alan Ross

A website that focuses on my work in interior design as opposed to my purely artistic work.
This is highlighted on my main website www.artinsteel.co.uk which covers sixteen years of my career as an artist.
For many years I have worked as a sculptor and as a spin off I started working on projects for my home. Initially I could not find any shelves worthy of my awful CD collection so I made my own, then it was book shelves. After that I started applying the same principles to furniture design and eventually to lighting.

These all build on my work as a sculptor and are based on the principle of keeping things simple and beautiful, often taking in ideas inspired by the Bauhaus Movement. I enjoy using industrial materials and techniques to make everyday items that work almost as sculptural forms by themselves while still being functional. A style that suits my methods of working using strong lines and open spaces in structures. I also like to create lightweight and at times fragile looking structures.
The pictures below give two examples of this.

My book case and Spyball lamp.
Having both lamp and shelves made in similar materials integrates both pieces of furnishing, avoiding the 'Ikea Shopping' effect

contemporary lighting, bookshelves

Below is a detail shot of the Spyball lamp, industrial materials at their best

designer lighting

The shelves are built using a system I developed and have been using for several years.
The light is a recent design inspired by natural forms, with a hint of 1930's Sci-fi. A mixture of brutal industrial style and natural flowing curves.

Both are made using the materials as in their original state, not painted but protected with waxes, keeping their natural appearances and textures

I work mainly to commission rather than keeping a stock of items.

All of the works on this website are available on demand and can all be customised within certain parameters. I am also quite happy to discuss and work from fresh ideas, this is often an approach that leads to the best results.
If you want to discuss ideas informally free to contact me anytime.
